Synthetic production of soda ash occurs using either the Solvay process or the Hou Process. We use the widely accepted Solvay production process, which represented approximately 46% of global soda ash production in 2011. The Solvay process is based on the precipitation of sodium bicarbonate (crude) when an ammoniated solution of salt is carbonated with carbon dioxide from a coke fired lime kiln. The sodium bicarbonate is then filtered, dried and calcined to sodium carbonate (soda ash).
