Niagara Falls - Day & Night Oct 31, 2007

My mom and dad took us on a trip to Niagara Falls when we were kids. I remember walking out on the cantilevered platform wearing the park-provided raincoat and getting blown all over with water.

Never visited again after coming back to the U. S.

Steve,

Thank you for the links. You should visit Niagara Falls again. I believe this is where you started walking to the falls:

最好是春夏秋去游览 Oct 31, 2007

冬天游轮是停运的,河边也结了许多冰。春夏秋时,即使游轮上大家都穿塑料雨衣,但还是会打湿衣服。

那里确实有水电站。

Yueyin,

Thanks for the clips and photos.

Yes, it was something like the scene shown in the above clip between 00:00:20 and 00:00:25 where people were wearing those yellow raincoats and getting poured on by the fall's water mist.

From what I remember, it also involved taking an elevator down. And the "Cave of the Winds" name sounds a bit familiar. So it very well could have been the tour described here ...

From Goat Island, visitors can also descend by elevator to Cave of the Winds and venture out along a (very wet) walking path at the foot of Bridal Veil Falls.

When you go to the Goat Island from the cantilevered platform, you have to drive or walk across a bridge above the American Falls.

If you visit Niagara Falls again, I am sure you will recall everything from your memory.

Yueyin,

Yes, I realized my mistake of using the term "cantilevered platform" when I saw in your clip the structure it referred to. I don't remember being on a platform like that. Even if we were there, I don't think something like that would have left a big impression on a 5 or 6-year-old.

My memory was more of being on the decks and walkways pictured in the Cave of the Winds tour which are also cantilevered at places to some extent. The more I read about the tour description you provided, the more it's coming back to me. Even the color of the raincoats were the same back then - of course in the mid 50's, all raincoats made and sold in the U. S. were of that color and made out of the same kind of tarp fabric. Today, they're probably all imported from China and made out of plastic

Dear PK,

Your photos of the Niagara Falls are excellent. (It must be taken by the MRS. because when I was there you showed no interest in touching my camera )
Pretty soon its going to be another year. I do not know the names of these buildings, and am hoping you wouldn't mind giving a title or name to each of the buildings here. Thanks! By the way, the ones that I had a ©copyright symbol on are the ones that

Hi All,

I have been to Europe only once and only to one country, France, so I can't really say much. But I have run around this country enough to say that Boston is the most European like of all American cities to me. The dozen of photos below is an attempt to capture that European feel I found in the buildings of Boston this past summer. Of course that European like quality can be felt in other aspects of life. But today I am glad I have the time to play with this group of shots.

David,

Thanks for sharing the wonderful pictures of Boston.

The one you took of the Boston Public Library entrance reminded me of the New York Public Library catalog room entrance. I guess it was the similarities of the arched doorway - or rather the appearance of an arch for the NYPL - and the general ambience (coloration, lighting, etc.) as seen here ...

The closest I got to a European-like city was Montreal. It must have been the French language that made it feel like a different continent to me.

Like Yueyin mentioned, at every major turning point, the only traffic indication was "Ouest" signs

More of Boston Nov 21, 2007

New England has more European like old buildings than anywhere else in the USA, but one may not notice that because of the rolling hills and lush vegetation. In a place as flat as Wisconsin where you can see much further, the spikes of churches can be spotted miles away. The pictures above focus on old buildings of Boston, the ones below are intended to show other aspects of the city.

Charles River 1, Boston

Charles River 2, Boston

Charles River 3, Boston

MIT is on the opposite side.

玫瑰? 月季? 蔷薇? Who can tell which is what?

When it comes to the nomenclature of flowers, I like English better, roses.

Parks are quiet and clean.

High traffic roads through the city are clean and free of dust.

Copley Square?

Chinatowns are always right in the middle of a city, and Boston's Chinatown is no exception.

Boston Common

新生报到 Boston is indeed a college town where lots of student housing is right in the city's streets. Does that remind you something? It reminded me. The only difference is that when I unpacked I had Chairman Mao's red books and when my big boy unpacked he had his Gameboy and MP3.

The Italians and the Chinese are the only ones that sell their stuff on the street like that. Chinatowns and "Little Italies" are usually next to each other, like the ones in New York and San Francisco, but this is not the case in Boston.

Where I had my most delicious lobster meal.

These lobsters are as big as my shoulder.

Uncle PK's welcome breakfast to David and his boy.

Boston Park Plaza Hotel 1. They say Lewinsky stays here when she comes to town but I did not see her.

Boston Park Plaza Hotel 2. The cool morning air is crisp and the moon last night is still there.

I tried my darnedest to plant some camellias around the house when I first moved down to Austin. Unfortunately multiple attempts all failed because of the hot summers in central Texas - remember the heat that almost caused you to pass out? Camellias like more moderate climes.

I'm having second thoughts. The leaves in your photo don't quite look like camellia leaves.

Some variety of roses have a loose-petal look similar to Sasanqua Camellia flowers. I'm not sure if they're called 蔷薇
